LS panel praises Baghel’s Godhan Nyaya Yojana

The Standing Committee on Agriculture in the Lok Sabha has lavished praise on Godhan Nyay Yojana of Chhattisgarh and urged the Central Government to implement a similar scheme of dung procurement in the entire country, a statement of the Chhattisgarh Government claimed on Wednesday.

Godhan Nyay Yojana is purely considered a brainchild of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.

The Standing Committee, chaired by P.C. Gaddigoudar, said that procurement of cattle dung from farmers will not only boost their income but create new employment opportunities, promote organic farming and solve the problem of stray cattle.

Before submitting the report in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the committee made a similar suggestion to Union Agriculture Ministry officials.

The Godhan Nyaya Yojana is being implemented in Chhattisgarh from July 20 last year. Under the scheme, cow dung bought from farmers and cattle ranchers is utilised to produce vermicompost and other products in Gauthan.

In Chhattisgarh, Godhan Nyaya Yojana is being operated through gauthans being built in every village under Suraji Gaon Yojana. Along with animal fodder and health care, employment-oriented activities are also conducted in the gauthans.

Dung is procured at Rs 2 per kg. So far Rs 80 crore has been paid to the dung seller farmers, cattle rearers and collectors. About 60,000 members of gauthans are earning Rs 942 lakh from various activities including vermicompost production.

Landless agricultural laborers are also earning regular income from Godhan Nyay Yojana.
