Act immediately against violation of Moneylender Act

Bhopal: The state government has directed district collectors to ensure strict legal action in case any moneylender violates provisions of Madhya Pradesh Moneylender Act 1934. The collectors have been asked that to direct all SDOs in their districts to convene an emergency meeting of moneylenders working in their respective areas and instruct them regarding the Act’s provisions.

It has been stated in the directives that SDOs should undertake fortnightly review of moneylenders’ transactions, seek accounts and details from them and direct them to behave with them leniently in view of affected farmers’ economic condition.

It is noteworthy that farmers’ crops had suffered loss due to excessive rains and floods during monsoon 2013. Recent hailstorm and unseasonal rains have also caused widespread damage to crops. Under these circumstances it is apprehended that farmers might not be able to repay loans taken from moneylenders. In this regard, it has been desired from collectors to continuously review accounts and ledgers of moneylenders. They should also keep watch that moneylenders do not resort to any unlawful means to recover loans from farmers. It should also be ensured that defaulter farmers do not take recourse to any untoward action under pressure of moneylenders.
