Pune Law Student Commits Suicide, Was Allegedly Ragged by Seniors

Officials of Fergusson College have said that there is no information with them about the alleged ragging of one of its students of Law who reportedly committed suicide in the neighbouring Ahmednagar district on January 25, reported PTI.

Prashant Chitalkar, the second-year Law student, who was staying in college hostel, had gone to his native place for Diwali vacation last year, did not report after the vacation and jumped into a well there to end his life.

According to a complaint filed by his father, he was allegedly subjected to ragging by the seniors, said report.

However, Dr NM Kulkarni, vice principal of college run by Deccan Education Society (DES) said that he had not filed any complaint of ragging with the college authorities, said report.

“We have no information about the incident, and there is no communication from police to college authorities in this connection,” he was quoted as saying.

He said that the tragedy could have occurred due to a possible domestic problem, said report.

Prashant committed suicide in Khadambe Rahuri taluka, where he had gone to his uncle’s place. He ended his life by jumping in a well, said police, adding that the ragging angle could not be ruled out.

Ahmednagar additional deputy superintendent of police Sunil Kadasane had said they are also investigating if ragging was a reason behind Prashant committing suicide.

Prashant is the son of a police constable.
