Heavy rain hits normal life in Madhya Pradesh, 4 dead

Bhopal/Indore: The incessant rain hit normal life across Madhya Pradesh, particularly Malwa region, claimed 4 lives in Ujjain and Indore. Two persons died and six others of a family were injured as a dilapidated old house collapsed due to heavy rainfall in Kot Mohalla on Saturday night in Ujjain.

In Indore, a woman died and a youth was seriously hurt when a tree fell on them while they were trying to cover their hut with a cement sheet.A youth had swept away on Saturday while trying to cross a nullah in Indore.

With the heavy rains, several rivers and rivulets are flowing near the danger mark. Bhopal has lost its connectivity with Sehore and Indore. Since rainwater played havoc and the low-lying areas were inundated, the district administration shifted many families to safe places in Indore, Sehore, Harda and Hoshangabad districts.

In Indore, several low-lying colonies in Khajrana and Bhanwarkua areas were inundated. Roads were flooded with rainwater as sewer system got choked at various places. Public transportation, too, has been adversely hit. About 110 mm (11 cm) rainfall has been recorded till 2 pm on Saturday. Heavy showers have been predicted in Malwa region in the next two days.

Heavy rainfall in Indore was witnessed throughout the day. The condition of low lying areas is becoming worse with continuous rain. Indore Municipal Corporation has launched a rescue operation for safe exit of the people living in low lying areas. Indore Collector Akash Tripathi is monitoring the situation closely and has instructed the officials to take necessary action.

Air traffic has been disrupted by the incessant rains as Indore bound Hyderabad -Indore Jet Airways flight was reportedly delayed for around three hours. Budni recorded 155 mm of rainfall while Harda recorded 154 mm of rainfall. Astha recorded 120 and Ichhawar recorded 132.

Due to heavy rains in Harda district, the Achlan river is flowing above the danger mark. Ashta faced the same situation as the downpour had rivers Parvati, Nevaas and Papnaas all swollen and roads in the city disconnected. Budhwara, Alipur, Khatik Market and Bus Stand were flooded with rain. Even a few cars were swept away by the fast flowing water.

Sehore district received 105.8 mm of rain submerging the bridge over Parvati river. More than a dozen villages lying close to Rampur dam were severely affected and half-a-dozen houses were damaged. Worst-hit is agriculture as crops have been damaged. More than 300 houses were flooded in low lying areas in Sehore.

The Bhopal-Indore highway is disconnected due to heavy rainfall in Nasrullahganj.  The water level in Narmada reached 947.80 feet which is still below danger mark.

The State capital also witnessed incessant rains on Saturday which disrupted normal life for a few hours, both in the morning and evening. The city received nine mm of rainfall while Bairagarh recorded 13.8 mm of rainfall. The Met department has claimed that the city will receive heavy and incessant rainfall in the next 2-3 days.
