Terming decision on triple talaq historic, PM Narendra Modi says ban will grant equality to Muslim women

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday has described Supreme Court’s verdict banning the practice of instant triple talaq as historic. Modi said ban on triple talaq will grant equality to Muslim women.

“I pay my respects to those women who had to lead miserable lives due to triple talaq and then started a movement which created an environment in the whole nation against the practice,” the prime minister had said.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah also lauded the Supreme Court ruling on triple talaq and said it was a victory for Muslim women and their right to live with dignity.

“I welcome this historical decision… This judgement is not about anyone’s victory or defeat. This is the victory of basic Constitutional rights of Muslim women and their right to live with equality,” Shah said.

Shah said that by declaring triple talaq as “unconstitutional”, the Supreme Court had given crores of Muslim women the right to live with self respect.

“It is the beginning of new era for the Muslim women to live with self respect and equality. The BJP welcomes the rights given to the Muslim women and sees it as a step forward towards a new India,” he said.

Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal also welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision.

“The government will study the Supreme Court’s verdict. The court has given its verdict, now Parliament will work on the basis of that,” the Minister of State for Finance said in Bikaner.
