Vir Das’s dig at Narayana Murthy as internet shreds ’70-hour work’

Comedian Vir Das took a dig at Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy’s comments about the ’70 hours a week’ work culture.

“Life’s hard. You meet a girl, fall in love, get married. Her dad wants you to work 70 hours a week. You can’t work that hard, you just wanna chill and run England,” he wrote in a tweet after Narayana Murthy’s remark created a buzz online.

In another tweet, he quipped: “If you’re working 70 hours a week, 5 days a week, essentially from 9am to 11pm. Getting home by 12.30, leave home by 7.30? You should be allowed to fart in your bosses office. If you’re going to request relationship like time commitment, you’ve got to accept the intimacy too.”

Vir Das’s posts come after Murthy emphasised the need to boost India’s work productivity while speaking on the inaugural episode of 3one4 Capital’s podcast, “The Record,”. He argued that unless the country’s youth commit to significantly longer working hours, India may struggle to keep pace with economies that have experienced remarkable progress over the past few decades.

Unsurprisingly, Murthy’s statement triggered a wave of reactions on social media. People slammed him for seemingly promoting a culture of overwork, likening it to a form of modern “slave culture.” Others, however, pointed out that the CEO might have been misquoted and that he was emphasising the importance of adopting a strong work ethic rather than clocking in excessive hours.
