UP Police Finally Gun Down Dreaded Dacoit in a Tough Battle

The dreaded dacoit Ghanshyam Nishad alias Naam has been shot dead by the police near Jamauli village, Uttar Pradesh, in a tough ambush in which he kept a battalion of 400 armed policemen at bay alone.

In the 48-hour ambush, he, while keeping 400 police personnel led by UP’s top officers engaged, killed three policemen, including company commander of the Provincial Armed Constabulary, and injured IGP VK Gupta, DIG SK Singh and the Special Task Force in-charge of Allahabad Navendu Singh.

The police also tried smoking him out by setting the houses of Jamauli village – where he was hiding in a cluster of around 40 houses – on fire after evacuating the villagers but each time policemen tried to approach the house where he was hiding, they came under fire.

After the policemen were shot, Addl DGP (Law and Order) Brij Lal took charge of the operations and mobilized forces for a round of final attack. However, with darkness falling and police lacking night-vision devices or arrangements to light up the place, the operation was suspended till Thursday morning.

“It is now certain that Ghanshyam is alone and has one self-loading rifle and one rifle of .315 bore with around 250 around of bullets. He has hand grenades too. His SLR was burnt in the fire but he is still alive and has enough ammunition to fight for the next 24 hours,” Additional SP, Chitrakoot, Jugal Kishore who led the operations on Tuesday had said.

Additional DGP Brijlal who took over the operations on Wednesday said: “We have lost three men. We will stop the operation only after getting Ghanshyam, alive or dead.”

When police raided the village at 11 am on Tuesday, Ghanshyam hid in a house and fired at them. He killed a constable, Shameem, and injured two. Additional forces were rushed and by the evening, all the villagers were evacuated.

On Wednesday when the police were searching for him, Ghanshyam shot dead PAC company commander Bani Madhav Singh and Mohd Iqbal, the driver of DIG Chitrakoot. In the next round, he injured the IG, DIG and the STF in-charge.

“Ghanshyam is so sure of his aim and is so quick in his attack and movement that we have yet not been able to find out his exact location”, said an STF sub-inspector.

The operation was hampered by the lack of communication devices and back-up. The police tried to smoke out the dacoit by burning the thatched houses. Though he was seen twice shifting his location, sources said, the police failed to shoot him down.
