Tension Persists in Poonch after Six-hour Firing along LoC

In the wake of six-hour long gunbattle between Indian and Pakistani armies along Line of Control (LoC) yesterday, tension persisted in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir though there are no reports of any exchange of fire today, said media reports.

The gunfight began yesterday at 9 am as Pakistani troops opened fire on Indian positions – Kranti and Kirpan posts manned by 17 Mahar of the Indian Army – at Krishna Ghati in Mendhar area of the district, nearly 200 km north of Jammu, injuring one Indian soldier.

After 3 pm on Sunday, there has been no incidence of exchange of fire, reports said.

“Until this morning, there were no reports of any other incident of firing on the LoC,” IANS quoted an army source as saying. “But there is tension in the air.”

However, the source declined to speculate what could be reasons behind Pakistani Army’s ‘unprovoked’ firing along the LoC, said reports.

“We have communicated to the army headquarters the nature of the hostile action on the LoC by the Pakistani army, that’s all,” an official was quoted as saying.

The two sides are likely to meet at a flag meeting today and will exchange notes on the increasing incidents of firing along the LoC, reports said.

India will protest against Pakistan’s actions, reports said quoting source.

As far as the Indian side is concerned, the army is alert, because the LoC is also the favourite infiltration route for terrorists to sneak into Indian Territory.

Moreover, Pakistan’s ceasefire violations – four times this month – have raised the level of tension.
