Naxals Worst Human Rights Offenders when it Comes to Torture: Report

A new report on Torture in India has revealed that Naxalites are country’s worst human rights offenders, however, their supporters maintain that the rebels have been fighting for survival, said media reports.

The Asian Centre for Human Rights says that Naxals are the worst violators of human rights when it comes to torture, reports said.

It is for the first time that a top human rights group in India admitted and emphasized the fact.

“This report makes it clear that the nation needs a Prevention of Torture Bill quickly,” Suhas Chakma, Director, Asian Center for Human Rights, was quoted as saying.

The report presents as example the case of American journalist Joel Elliot who was tortured by Delhi police in custody after being picked up allegedly stealing a taxi on their cover, reports said.

It notes that there has been a 41.66 % increase of custodial deaths since 2000 with Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat being top three offenders, said reports.
