National workshop on gram production on January 20

Bhopal: A national workshop of Directors Agriculture, higher officers of Union Agriculture Ministry, agriculture experts and specialists on various aspects of gram farming will he held at R.A.K. Agriculture College Sehore on January 20, 2014. The national workshop to be presided over by Union Agriculture Commissioner Shri J.S. Sandhu will discuss effects on gram production in current Rabi season. Experts will also discuss ways to extend area and increase gram production in areas having less irrigation facility.

According to Director Farmers’ Welfare and Agriculture Development Dr. D.N. Sharma, Agriculture Directors of Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra or their representatives will participate in the workshop. On the occasion, the keynote address will be delivered by chief scientist of Indian Pulses Research Centre, Kanpur. All participants will visit farmers’ fields and witness implementation of gram farming technique.

Gram area in Madhya Pradesh is the largest in the country. Among Rabi crops in Madhya Pradesh, gram area is second largest after wheat. Gram has become a beneficial crop for farmers due to evolution of a new disease-resistant variety with maximum productivity, conducive climate, balanced use of ferlitisers, coordinated pest control etc. During current Rabi, gram has been sown in about 37 lakh hectare, which is more than last year.
