Shano’s Death: Action after Examination of Medical Reports

Eventually swinging into action a day after 11-year-old school girl Shano Khan’s death of corporal punishment, police on Saturday said that action would be taken against the accused teacher after examining the medical and autopsy report.

Shano died on Friday failing her two days battle for life in a hospital lying comatose after being subjected to corporal punishment by her teacher for not knowing the English alphabet.

“The investigation into the case is on. We are looking into the postmortem and medical reports forwarded by the hospital. We will take necessary action after analysing them,” said Atul Katiyar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer Delhi).

Shano skidded into coma on Wednesday after her class teacher Manju in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) primary school in Narela in north Delhi bashed her up and made her stand in the Sun for more than an hour for failing to recite the alphabet.

MCD suspended the teacher and the school principal on Thursday, and Arti Mehra, Delhi Mayor, announced compensation of Rs 50, 000 for Shano’s parents.

The teacher, charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, on Friday wrote a letter to the deputy education officer of Narela, professing her innocence.

Shano’s death is not an isolated incident. In March 2008, a 15-year-old girl was beaten by a male teacher for declining to take private tuition from him. The girl died after remaining in coma for nearly two-and-a-half months.
