SC Grants SIT More Time to Submit Report on Gujarat Riots

The Supreme Court has granted 15 more days to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for carrying out probe against Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and 62 others in connection with post-Godhra riots and to submit its report, said media reports.

The SIT, whose term expires on April 30, had requested more time for submitting the report.

SIT chief RK Raghavan had yesterday said that the panel was toiling hard to keep the April 30 deadline for submission of report to the apex court.

It submitted a progress report to the Supreme Court in the case in January.

The Supreme Court had given the deadline to complete the inquiry into complaint of Zakia Jaffery where she has alleged that Modi, his cabinet colleagues, some police officials and senior bureaucrats aided and abetted post-Godhra riots of 2002.

Zakia’s husband and ex-MP Ehsan Jaffrey was among the 69 killed during the 2002 riots in Gulburg society.

Modi was questioned by SIT in connection with Zakia’s complaint on March 27 for over nine hours.
