SC Allows 44 Deemed Universities to Admit Students for Next Session

The Supreme Court has allowed all 44 deemed or private universities, which government is trying to shut down, to proceed with their admissions for next academic year, said media reports.

The apex court gave the ruling turning down a request from the central government to ban these universities from admitting new students, reports said.

The court observed that no decision was made on their future and asked why they should be stopped from their normal procedures, said reports.

In a report submitted in January, the government had said that these universities were found to be below standard, and were functioning as ‘family fiefdoms’.

The government wanted these universities, most of them in Tamil Nadu, to be closed.

Deemed universities are allowed to function with complete autonomy on their syllabus, and fees.

The government believes that many of these universities charge exorbitant rates, accept too many students, and ignore basic quota policies.
