Russian Rape Victim Fears for Life, Wants to Withdraw Case

The Russian girl, who was allegedly raped by a Goa politician, has written to the Russian Consulate saying that she fears for her life and has alleged assault by supporters of the rape accused.

The girl wants to withdraw her case, for police, she said, are favouring the accused.

She said that immediately after the attempt to assault her, she rushed to Panaji, 30 km away from the scene to lodge a complaint with the police.

Police is reported to claim that they were unable to get access to the rape accused.

However, a TV news channel claimed to have accessed the accused politician and reported that he told it that all the charges against him were false and politically motivated. He also claimed that he was not summoned by police for questioning.

Nevertheless, the Goa Police have claimed that there is no truth in what John Fernandes has said, adding that he was not available for questioning. They also said that the crime branch opposed John’s bail plea in High Court.

Meanwhile, high-profile south Goa politician John Fernandes was let off on bail on Tuesday. The anticipatory bail was granted by the south Goa district and sessions court to Fernandes after the defence lawyer argued that there was inconsistency in the victim’s statements and that she had been changing her stand often.

Two days ago, the charge on the Goa politician was changed from attempt to rape to rape after the Goa Police Crime Branch stepped in.
