Ruchika Case: Rathore Sentenced to One-and-a-half Years in Prison

In Ruchika molestation case, former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore has been sentenced to one and a half years of imprisonment by a Sessions court in Chandigarh, said media reports.

The court announced the ruling on a plea moved by Rathore challenging his conviction and six-month sentence awarded to him by a CBI court in December last year.

Family members of the victim and the CBI too had filed petitions for enhancement of the sentence to maximum two years.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Gurbir Singh on May 20 had fixed May 25 as date for announcing the judgement on all the three pleas.

Earlier, he had fixed May 20 as day for announcement of verdict but deferred it to Tuesday saying that he needed more time to complete the process of writing the judgement.

Conducting in-camera hearing, the court heard arguments on day-to-day basis from May three to 11.

On December 21 last year, a CBI court had sentenced Rathore to six-month imprisonment for molesting Ruchika, then aged 14, at Panchkula on August 12, 1990.

Three years after she was molested, the budding tennis player committed suicide.
