Pvt Hospital Allegedly Refuses to Admit Injured People, Crowd Goes Berserk

A private hospital allegedly declined to admit some persons injured in a road accident that occurred in 24 South Parganas district in the morning, agitating locals, who vandalized hospital furniture, medical equipment and vehicles, said media reports.

According to reports, a matador with 30 persons aboard rammed into a lorry at Patuli in South 24 Parganas district, killing six persons and leaving nine others injured.

Immediately after the accident, a crowd of nearly 200 people gatecrashed the hospital carrying injured persons and demanded that they should be at once admitted, reports said.

Police said that hospital allegedly refused to admit them and the crowd resultantly went on the rampage, said reports.

Then, perturbed crowd burnt hospital furniture, medical equipments, including stretchers, and ransacked the restaurant inside the hospital, reports said.

Police said that the crowd also burnt ablaze some vehicles parked near the hospital obstructing fire tenders from approaching the spot, said reports.

They also damaged the fire tenders, said reports citing police.

The injured were then rushed to state-run M R Bangur Hospital.

West Bengal Sunderban affairs development minister Kanti Ganguly went to the spot to persuade the mob which fought a pitched battle with the police. Reinforcements were rushed and the situation was now under control, reports said citing police.

While the locals alleged that the hospital turned down their plea to offer emergency first-aid to the injured, the hospital authorities were not available for comment.
