Uganda Landslide Kills Hundreds
Rescue workers have recovered at least 106 dead bodies after massive landslides buried several villages around Mount Elgon on the Uganda-Kenya border on Tuesday. Nearly 250 others, still missing, are also feared dead.
The army has joined the search for the missing in eastern Uganda’s Bududa district after Monday night’s landslides, caused by unusually heavy rains.
The final death toll is expected to be much higher after rescue workers are able to steer to the disaster zone and find more victims.
More rain is forecast for the area.
In the meantime, the bodies recovered will be buried in mass graves beginning Wednesday.
Officials say the mudslide destroyed homes, markets, schools, and a health clinic.
