Peaceful polling in Assam

GUWAHATI: With the first phase being held in Assam on Monday, elections to five assemblies kick-started. Assam polling began at 7 a.m. and proceeded peacefully till day.

Election official said, “Around 16 percent votes have been cast in the first three hours. It has been largely peaceful.”

Voting is to continue till 3 p.m. in about 11,000 polling stations in 13 districts. Elections in the first phase are being held in 62 assembly constituencies of the total 126 assembly seats.

Tarun Gogoi, Chief Minister of Assam making a bid for a third successive Congress government in the state, cast his vote in his home district of Jorhat in eastern Assam.

After casting his vote he said, “I am confident the Congress will make a hat-trick with people having full confidence in us. We shall get majority and form the next government.”

An official said, “We expect free and fair polling with adequate security arrangements being made.”

Here people in large numbers queued up before polling booths well before the scheduled time.
