Kotla Pitch Fiasco A Great Embarrassment: Gill

Union Sports Minister MS Gill has termed the Ferozeshah Kotla pitch fiasco as a ‘great embarrassment’, saying that the Cricket Board and the DDCA jointly own an explanation to the country for it.

“It is very unfortunate and a great embarrassment for the country. It should not have happened. I watched the match a bit on TV and it was terrible to see such an incident taking place,” Gill said.

“What I can say, all those who are in-charge of cricket nationally and state-wise can only answer on the issue,” he added.

It may be mentioned that the fifth and last ODI between India and Sri Lanka was called off when the Lankan innings was into its 24th over after Thilina Kandambv complained to the on-field umpires about the dangerous bounce.

The cancellation evoked mob trouble as infuriated viewers hurled water bottles and ripped the stadium’s chairs.

The episode has put a question mark over Kotla’s prospect as a 2011 World Cup venue as the Delhi ground faces the risk of being banned by the International Cricket Council for a minimum of 12 months.
