Naga Leaders to Meet Singh This Evening

In a bid to find a solution for the economic blockade, a delegation of senior Naga leaders is likely to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Manmohan Singh this evening, said media reports.

The Naga tribes have been imposing economic blockade since April 11 on National Highways 39 and 53 in protest against the election to six autonomous district councils and to support the proposed visit of NSCN (IM) leader Thuingaleng Muiva.

The All Naga Students’ Association (ANSAM) has alleged that councils were not given enough power to carry out development works and so they were against the elections.

Earlier in the day, Union Home Secretary G.K. Pillai said that central government has decided to send security forces to lift the economic blockade by Naga groups in Manipur.

“The blockade would be removed all along NH-39 from Assam to anipur,” Pillai was quoted as saying while talking to reporters.

He further said the chief secretaries of Nagaland and Manipur will meet on Wednesday to review the situation.
