6.0-magnitude earthquake hits New Zealand

Wellington: An earthquake measuring six on the Richter scale hit New Zealand’s South Island on Monday.

According to GeoNet, the island country’s earthquake monitoring agency, the tremor centred 30 km north-west of Wanaka town.

The agency recorded the temblor as “severe”.Tremors were also felt as far as the capital city of Wellington which is near the North Island’s southernmost point. No casualties or damage to property have been reported yet.

Earlier, earthquake, measuring on 7.9 Richter scale, hit the neighouring country last week.

The death toll in Nepal’s devastating earthquake on Sunday jumped to 7,056 with another 14,227 people injured.

At least 38 Indians were among 54 foreigners killed in the 7.9-magnitude quake last week that left a trail of devastation and suffering. 48 foreigners, including 10 Indians, were also injured.
