Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Private Limited, which donated Rs 584 crores in electoral bonds to the BJP, purchased electoral bonds worth Rs 140 crore in April 2023, a month before it was awarded a Rs 14,400-crore tunnel project in Mumbai, according to data released by the Election Commission. The company was also recently fined by Mumbai’s civic body for delays caused in another unrelated project, sources told India Today TV.

The Hyderabad-based company, Megha Engineering (MEIL), one of the top electoral bond buyers, donated a total of Rs 966 crore through electoral bonds. Around 60 percent of its donations went to the BJP.

In 2023, the company won the contract for the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project passing under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Mumbai, worth Rs 14,400 crores. A month before securing the contract, MEIL had purchased electoral bonds worth Rs 140 crore.

The SGNP twin tunnel project is 11.84 km long. The Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project, divided into two packages, has a four-year deadline for completion.

Additionally, the company, in a joint venture, secured the contract for a bullet train station at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai.

According to sources, the company was also penalised by the Mumbai civic body for delaying an infrastructure project in the city. It had secured a contract for a road concreting project worth around Rs 1800 crores and was penalised by the BMC for delaying the work.

Megha Engineering works with civic bodies such as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), as well as several central government engineering projects.

Apart from the BJP, another significant portion of electoral bonds purchased by the company was for the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), worth Rs 195 crores. The company also has numerous engineering contracts with the Telangana government.

MEIL donated Rs 85 crores to the DMK in Tamil Nadu, Rs 37 crores to the YSR Congress Party in Andhra Pradesh, Rs 28 crores to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), and Rs 5 crores to the Janata Dal (S) through electoral bonds.
