MCMC asked to be alert regarding paid news

Bhopal: Director Election Commission of India Shri Dhirendra Ojha held discussions on the activities of MCMC during 3-phase Lok Sabha elections today. Joint Chief Electoral Officer Shri S.S. Bansal, Shri Shariq Noor of Prasar Bharati and freelance journalist Shri Girish Upadhyay were also present on the occasion.

It was informed that media certification and monitoring committee should dispose of cases put before it promptly and intimate concerning candidate. If decision is not acceptable to candidate, he or she can appeal at state level MCMC within 48 hours, which will dispose of it within 96 hours.

It was informed during video-conferencing that MCMC should also follow freedom of press during its functioning. Monitoring of social media and bulk SMSes were also discussed. Regarding cable network, it was informed that legal action including sentence and fine can be taken against political parties and candidates on airing advertisements without permission on electronic media.
