Madras HC Turns down Nalini’s Plea for Premature Release

In Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, the Madras High Court has turned down life convict Nalini Sriharan’s plea for her early release under general amnesty scheme, said media reports.

She had approached the high court against the Tamil Nadu government’s decision rejecting her plea for premature release.

Nalini claimed in her plea that the report of the Prison Advisory Board (PAB) committee, which took up her premature release request for consideration, gave a favourable report but the state government overruled it on the ground of another report given by the Royapetta police station that anticipated law and order problem in the area if she was released.

However, state government on March 11 said that it would take a decision in the case within two weeks time.

The counsel for the state government is reported to have given this assurance to the Madras High Court.

Nailaini, imprisoned in the Vellore Central Jail, has claimed that she was entitled for release since 2005, as she had completed 14 years in jail.
