Jaipur Indian Oil Fire Death Toll Climbing

Quickly climbing to 12, the death toll in the major blaze at the Indian Oil Corporation fuel depot in Jaipur is expected to spiral further as some 150 people are being treated at city hospitals with burn injuries, some of them grievous.

Media reports say efforts are on the douse the fire that erupted at around 1930 hrs this evening while petrol was being transferred from the depot to a pipeline on the outskirts of the city.

The fire is said to have acquired an enormous shape.

Some 20 ambulances have been pressed into service to ferry the injured to city hospitals. The injured are being treated at the Sawai Mann Singh and MG hospitals.

“There may be injuries to some. We do not know as of now. An assessment can only be made after the fire is contained,” a corporation official was quoted as saying in New Delhi.

Power supply to the area remains cut off as a precautionary measure.

Though, the cause behind the fire was not immediately known, it came on a day when the firework festival of Gyaras is being celebrated in several parts of the country.
