Life term for killing JNU Students’ Union leader

PATNA: The CBI court in Patna awarded life term to three convicts on Friday after Fifteen years in the killing of former JNU Students’ Union president Chandrashekhar in Bihar’s Siwan district.

The three accused were – Mantu Khan alias Iliyas Warsi, Dhruv Kumar Jaiswal and Sheikh Munna. A fine of Rs 40,000 each was also slapped on them the non payment of which leads to a rigorous imprisonment of one more year.

The JNUSU leaders, including two others were shot in broad daylight at J P Chowk in Siwan town on March 31, 1997. He was addressing a public meeting in support of the Bihar bandh.

The other persons killed were local ML leader Shyam Narayan Yadav andBhutti Mian, a poor villager.

Three persons were injured in that incident. The FIR lodged included names of former Siwan MP Mohd Shahabuddin, his aide Rustam Khan, Mohd Riyazuddin, Mantu Khan, Dhruv Kumar Jaiswal and Sheikh Munna as the accused. CBI was later handed over the case which filed chargesheet against five accused in May 1998. One accused Riyazuddin died during trial.

The investigation into alleged criminal conspiracy of Shahabuddin and Rustam is still on. The verdict was delivered after hearing 20 prosecution and 15 defence witnesses.
