Liberhan Commission Should’ve Indicted Congress, Leaders: Nitish

Accusing the Congress of being “responsible” for the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said the Liberhan Commission should have indicted the party and its leaders.

With the issue gaining in significance, Nitish’s statement came a day after the Opposition RJD called for the indictment of all 68 people named in the commission report and NDA partners BJP termed the report as ‘politically motivated’.

“The Congress is responsible for the demolition of the Mosque at Ayodhya and the Liberhan Commission should have indicted the party and its leaders for bringing shame on the nation,” said Nitish, speaking to reporters in Patna.

He said that after the demolition, the then Congress government led by late PV Narsimha Rao had published a white paper, on the events leading to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1993.

“The issue was debated in Parliament and the Congress government was also held responsible for the demolition during a no-confidence motion at that time,” he said.

He alleged that the Congress had ignored suggestions to accord Union Territory status to Ayodhya and to take control of the area with the help of central forces and army, besides taking action against the UP government.

While underlining that the Liberhan Commission should have gone into all these details. Nitish accused the Congress of using the issue as a “political tool”.
