Landslide hits Nilgiris after heavy rain in Tamil Nadu

As the northeast monsoon intensifies in Tamil Nadu, five districts, including Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Madurai, Theni, Dinidigul, and a few taluks in Nilgiris, have declared a holiday for schools on Thursday.

A landslide occurred on the Kotagiri-Mettupalayam road in Nilgiris district. Traffic was disrupted and vehicles were diverted to another route now. Restoration work is underway.

Meanwhile, two trains on the Nilgiris Mountain Railway section were cancelled as soil under the track washed away between Kallar and Adderly due to heavy rain. Waterlogging was reported in several parts of Madurai.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts isolated heavy rainfall over Kerala and Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

The Met Department predicts light to moderately scattered and fairly widespread rainfall across the southern Peninsula of India.

Kerala has experienced significant rainfall over the last few days, with Kannur district recording 7 cm of rainfall on Wednesday.

The IMD’s latest bulletin indicates widespread rainfall in Kerala for the next two days, while Tamil Nadu is expected to witness fairly widespread rainfall during the same period.
