Padmaavat box office report day 1: Deepika’s film beats Dangal, Baahubali 2; creates new record in Australian markets

Mumbai: Padmaavat is off to a good start! Even as the film is not being screened in some of the cities in the country due to continuous agitation, it has made a record on its opening day in Australian markets. The film, starring Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmini, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji, has earned A$ 355k in Australia on Thursday, hitting a record figure for Bollywood films for first day. In New Zealand it has earned NZ$ 61k so far.

‏Interestingly, the film has beaten the earnings of smash hits like Aamir Khan’s Dangal and Prabhas’ Baahubali in Australian market. Talking about the same, trade analyst and senior film critic Komal Nahta tweeted, “And this should put the Rajput Karni Sena in an embarrassing position: First day comparative figures – Padmavat 355K, Bahubali 2 was 212K, Dangal was 247K. And guys, K stands for thousand, not for Karni!!”

Senior trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh too tweeted about Padmaavat’s ‘FANTABULOUS START in key international markets on Thursday’. He also gave us figures from some key markets – AUSTRALIA: A$ 367,984 [Rs 1.88 cr], NEW ZEALAND: NZ$ 64,265 [Rs 29.99 lakhs], UK [preview screenings]: £ 97,604 [Rs 88.08 lakhs]

The film’ performance in India though has been affected by the ongoing tension and protests. Even as law and order enforcement agencies are on their toes in the country to ensure a safe movie watching experience for fans, the paid previews that opened on January 24 raked in Rs 5 crore only. Also, the early estimates coming in about the opening day numbers for Thursday are dismal, with trade analysts putting this number at Rs 18 – 18.5 crore.
