Protesters Target Churches in Malaysia

Four Christian churches in Malaysia have been attacked amid tensions over a court ruling allowing use of the word ‘Allah’ to non-Muslims in the country.

Attackers in the Selangor province of the country threw fire-bombs at a local church Friday afternoon, media reports said.

The fire-bomb attack came hours after a similar incident in the capital Kulala Lumpur and attempts to start a fire at two Christian prayer facilities in a nearby suburb.

Malysian home minister Hishammuddin Hussein has appealed for calm and assured religious groups in the country that “they are safe”.

“I take the events that happened last night very seriously,” he was quoted as saying.

The controversy erupted after a Malaysian court overturned a government ban on non-Muslims using the word “Allah” to refer to the term God in the Malay language.

The ruling sparked protests as conservative Muslims, while reverent of Jesus as a messenger of God, do not accept him to be God or his son and believe ‘Allah’ to be the omnipotent creator with no equal.

The court ruling, however, has since been suspended, after the government appealed and the Roman Catholic Church agreed to the suspension.
