Govt Orders Enquiry into CAT Online Exams Mess

With the Common Admission Test (CAT) online exams being marred by chaos, Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has come down heavily at the IIMs for the messed up test, ordering a detailed enquiry into the server crash which impacted nearly 8,000 students.

According to reports, the server crash occurred due to attack by two viruses identified as the ‘Conflicer’ and ‘W32 Nimda’. The viruses attacked the system causing it to slow down.

Now efforts are being made to quarantine the systems from these viruses to make sure that smooth conduct in the remaining days.

It may be mentioned that on the first two days of the exams, tests were called off at 47 labs and on 33 labs on Monday, for students faced problems in logging at the exam centers affecting nearly 8,000 aspirants who will be rescheduled.

These include centers in Delhi (3), Bhopal, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Ghaziabad, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Calcutta, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur and Varanasi.

Over 2.4 lakh students registered for the CAT this year, which is being conducted through computers for the first time. The IIMs for the first time have entrusted the task of conducting the CAT to Prometric, an American firm, which is organising the computer-based test over a period of 10 days.
