IIMs to Have Campuses Abroad
In a significant decision, the central government has agreed that board members and directors of Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) will be anointed by an independent panel of industrialists and academicians. In addition, IIMs have been told to establish their campuses abroad.
Presently, Ministry for Human Resource Development make these appointments. The government places ads in papers for these positions and then shortlists respondents.
Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal held a meeting with IIM directors on Friday to discuss several issues.
It may be mentioned that IIM faculty has been arguing for quite long that independent collegiums will bring in more transparency in the selection of directors and board members.
IIMs and IITs have been fighting the government for more autonomy in recent months.
The Ministry has also approved performance-related incentives for IIM faculty.
The government will meet IIMs’ representatives in January to discuss how to implement this.
