Intelligence Reports Hint at Terror Threat to West Coast: Home Minister

Intelligence agencies have signified that there is a terror threat to the country’s west coast, said Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday while launching the NSG hubs, adding that the indication did not mean that there would be an imminent attack.

“There is an intelligence input (and) as is the practice established recently, we share all inputs immediately with the state governments concerned,” Chidambaram said.

“There is an input that there could be a threat to the west coast. We have, therefore, shared it with (the governments of) Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra. But that does not mean that there is an imminent attack,” he added while inaugurating a regional hub of NSG in Hyderabad.

“There is an input that there could be a threat to the west coast. We have, therefore, shared it with (the governments of) Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra. But that does not mean that there is an imminent attack,” he added while inaugurating a regional hub of NSG in Hyderabad.

While launching a regional hub of NSG in Chennai earlier in the day, the Home Minister said that anti-terror hubs will be established in Bangalore and jodhpur using special forces of the Army.

Chidambaram also clarified that opening NSG hubs in no way meant that there was an increase in terror threat to the country.

“We are also using special forces of the Army. Bangalore hub is by the special forces of the Army. I am trying to set up a special forces of the Army in Jodhpur and one in Guwahati using the Border Security Force,” he said.

“Establishing NSG hubs will increase its flexibility and reach and it does not mean that terrorist threat has gone up in the country,” he added.

The minister referred to the Mumbai terror attacks in November last year in the course of which 12 hours were spent before NSG could reach the site of attacks and said that these hubs would shorten the response time and enable the commandos to reach any part of the country quickly in case of any terror threat.
