Gas Disaster Verdict An Eye Opener for N-Liability Bill: Achuthanandan

Kerala chief minister VS Achuthanandan has said that verdict in Bhopal gas disaster case should be an eye opener for those in favour of the Civil Nuclear Liability Bill, said media reports.

Talking to reporters following his weekly cabinet briefing, he termed the verdict as grossly inadequate and held the government and the courts responsible for this, saying that it showed their approach towards monopoly capitalists, reports said.

The chief minister said that the case took 26 years to come to a verdict was a disgrace for the judiciary, said reports.

He said that the chairman of the Union Carbide went scot-free and the Indians, who were in charge of the plant, escaped with minor punishments, reports said.

Achuthanandan said that there was opinion the world over against the verdict, said reports.

He added that the verdict showed how worse the situation would be in the case of a nuclear accident if the Nuclear Liability Bill became the law, reports said.
