Former PM Lal Bahadur Shashtri’s Watch Stolen

A precious watch belonging to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri has been stolen from the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial in national capital, which is located near the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The watch, gifted to Shashtri by his Russian counterpart Alexei Kosygin in 1966, had a historical importance.

“The historical importance of that watch is too much. It was gifted to him by Russian President and is thus, priceless. I’m from the field of history, I’m not here to determine its cost, it is as I told you, priceless,” said Kundan Singh, Assistant Curator of Lal Bahadur Shastri Museum.

That thieves could break into the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial in central Delhi Sep 3 and flee with the golden watch has pained Shastri’s family.

“My father felt that this watch is quite expensive. When he returned from Russia, he asked me whether I would like to wear the golden watch. I readily agreed. I wore that watch for 40 years and when the memorial was inaugurated by the prime minister in 2005, I gave it to the memorial,” son Anil Shastri was quoted as saying by IANS.

The authorities of the memorial discovered the theft on September 3, but reported the theft on September 7 after an internal investigation to locate the watch did not succeed.

According to reports, a complaint has been lodged in the Tughlak Road police station under Section 380 (theft) of the IPC, and officials of the memorial said that an independent inquiry was conducted into the incident by the memorial, but they were unsuccessful in their task.
