First Year of UPA-II ‘Reasonable Achievement’; Younger People Should Take over: PM

Addressing a press conference for the first time in four years, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described the first year of UPA-II as one of ‘reasonable achievement’ and said that younger people should take over, said media reports.

Talking to reporters, Singh, however, said that his government could have done more in the first year of the second term, reports said.

“I believe that the record of our first year of UPA-II is a record of reasonable achievement. I am the first person to admit that we could have done more,” the prime minister was quoted as saying.

Singh said that one should be contended with ‘what we have achieved’, said reports.

“There is always room for improvement and for better outcome. But I do believe that the record of our first year is a record of reasonable achievement,” he was quoted as saying.

Answering a question whether he would make way for Rahul Gandhi to become the Prime Minister during his current tenure, the Prime Minister said, “I would be very happy to make place for anybody who the Congress party decides.”

“I feel younger people should take over. I will feel very happy to make place for younger people as and when Congress party decides,” he was quoted as saying. “Rahul Gandhi is doing a good job in reviving Congress party.”
