First Bhopal GoM Meeting Ends, Two More over Weekend

Bhopal  —  Coming out of the first meeting of the newly reconstituted Group of Ministers (GoM) on Bhopal gas tragedy Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram, said the grouping was moving in the right direction and will compile its report by Sunday.

Chidambaram, who heads the GoM, told reporters that the Group was determined address all issues, including relief, rehabilitation and remediation and legal options in the wake of the recent trial court judgement in the case, by Sunday.

He said that the ministerial panel was looking at all the issues separately and would later take a comprehensive view of the situation.

The group is reported to have focused on the number of people affected, number of claims accepted and claims categorised as death and injury cases, during the first session.

Promising a sympathetic consideration to those affected by the tragedy, Chidamabaram said the panel will meet in two sessions tomorrow and on Sunday, before finalizing the recommendations on Monday.

The GoM includes Union Ministers M Veerappa Moily, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kamal Nath, MK Alagiri, Kumari Selja, S Jaipal Reddy, Prithviraj Chavan and Jairam Ramesh as well as Madhya Pradesh Minister for Gas relief and Rehabilitation Babulal Gaur, who is a permanent invitee.

Cabinet Secretary KM Chandrashekhar, Home Secretary GK Pillai, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao were among the officials who attended the meeting.
