Communal Violence in Bareilly, Curfew Imposed in Five Police Station Areas

After widespread communal violence, curfew has been imposed in many tense localities of Bareillyk, reported PTI quoting officials.

“After large-scale violence in which nearly 20 people, including an SP and some other policemen were injured, curfew has been extended to Subhash Nagar police station area. The situation is tense but under control,” they were quoted as saying.

Till now, five police station areas of the city are under cufew, report said.

In protest against release of Sunni cleric Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan who was taken into custody on charges of inciting a mob resulting in communal clashes, Bajrang Dal activists took to arson and brick-batting in Sanjay Nagar and Subhash Nagar localities on Friday, report said.

Mob set on fire many shops and vehicles and also opened fire at a number of places in the city, report said.

Later heavy force was deployed through the district to avert any untoward incidence, said report.

“Fresh reinforcement is being sent to the trouble-hit areas of the city to control the situation,” report quoted sources as saying.

Nine officers, including PAC commandant Jyoti Narain, four additional SPs and four deputy superintendents are already in city, said report.

Report said that the mob defied curfew in four police station areas of Prem Nagar, Qila Baradari and Kotwali, report said.

For controlling the mob, police had used tear gas shells and fired rubber bullets.
