Violence broke out in the Osmania University on Wednesday as police opened fire in the air in the university campus and baton-charged the agitated students who were carrying body of their colleague who committed suicide over creation of Telangana state, reported IANS.
According to the report, police and paramilitary forces attempted to stop students from marching towards the city centre which led to clashes.
Eyewitnesses said that many students were wounded in violence and the condition of one of them is critical, said report.
The police stopped the procession near the Ladies Hostel in the campus while the students wanted to take the body to Martyr’s Memorial near the state assembly building, said report, adding that body was later shifted out of the campus by police.
Venugopal Reddy, a final year MCA student, had set himself ablaze early Tuesday. His burnt body was found in the university campus. In his suicide note, Reddy had said that he was afraid that Telangana state would not become a reality.
The students’ Joint Action Committee (JAC) kept his body in the campus through Tuesday night and had planned to take it to his native Nalgonda district in a procession.
