Basu Is ‘Very Critical’, Has Multi-Organ Failure: Docs
Veteran CPM leader and former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu is ‘very critical’ and is showing symptoms of multi-organ failure, doctors attending on him were quoted as saying by media reports on Friday.
Dr A K Maity, Basu’s person physician was quoted as saying by PTI that the former West Bengal chief minister who underwent a two-hour medical procedure called haemodialysis on Thursday night, would again undergo the process on Friday if his health permitted.
“The 95-year-old leader will also undergo a tracheotomy if his condition permits,” Dr Maity, who is on the medical board of the AMRI Hospital in Kolkata where Basu is being treated, was quoted as saying.
The doctor said that last night’s dialysis succeeded to some extent in reversing the toxins in his blood, but his urine output decreased to 10 ml per hour against the normal 40 ml, said report.
He said that urine output usually decreases after dialysis. “There is neither any further improvement nor deterioration in his condition,” he said.
Dr Susruth Banerjee, another doctor on the medical board, also said that the former chief minister was showing signs of multi-organ failure, report said.
“If Basu is able to tolerate a two-hour dialysis again, another dialysis might be done in the evening. His condition is very critical with his heart being erratic and there has been deterioration in his senses,” he was quoted as saying.
Basu was admitted to the hospital on January one with pneumonia. He has been on a ventilator since January 6.
