Central government mulls introduction of Bill in winter session of Parliament to end triple talaq

New Delhi: The Central government is mulling over introducing a Bill to end triple talaq in the winter session of Parliament. This comes in the backdrop of the Supreme Court judgment of August 22 that set aside the practice of talaq-e-biddat among Muslim husbands. A ministerial committee has been constituted to frame a law, said media reports.

It is learnt that in order to give effect to the Supreme Court order, the government is considering to bring about a legislation or amendments to existing penal provisions which shall make instantaneous triple talaq an offence.

According to sources, the government’s justification for the need for a legislation also stems from the fact that there have been reports of number of divorces by way of talaq-e-biddat even after the Supreme Court judgment.

In a recent incident of talaq-e-biddat, it has been reported that a person in a leading education institution divorced his wife through WhatsApp and short message service and that the wife approached the police in the case.
