15,000 IIT Teachers Go On Hunger Strike

On the issue of revision in pay structure, nearly 15, 000 teachers of hallowed Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) across the country have gone on a hunger strike but did not boycott classes.

The strike, under the banner of the All India IIT Faculty Federation, resulted following no response was received from the Human Resources Development Ministry on their charter of demands, including withdrawal of 40 per cent cap on promotion of professors to senior grade.

The professors of the eminent institutes went ahead with the protest after HRD Minister Kapil Sibal dismissed their demands of withdrawal of 40 per cent cap on promotion of professors to senior grade.

“We had asked for a meeting with the HRD Ministry representatives on the issue. But there is no response. Hence, we went on with the agitation,” Federation president Prof M Thenmozi of IIT-Madras was quoted as saying by PTI.
