Washington urged Pakistan to support against militancy

NEW DELHI: On Timothy J. Roemer US Ambassador to India said Washington has asked Islamabad to do more in the global fight against militancy.

Roemer, who visited the famous hermitage of Mahatma Gandhi here, said the United States had urged Pakistan to go after safe havens for militants within its territory.

He said, “The United States put a great deal of pressure on Pakistan to go after safe havens in Pakistan, to target al Qaeda leadership and other terrorist groups that might threaten Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and United States homelands.”

“And you have seen individuals from the United States Government at the highest level say to the government of Pakistan, ‘You are a good partner, you are concentrating more on extremism within your country, but you need to do more’,” he added.

The US envoy further said Washington has indicted four individuals, one who was charged of being involved in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, and has confirmed connections with Pakistan.

“You have seen that the United States in the last two weeks has decided to indict four more individuals and one of those individuals had connections in support to 26/11, with certain organisations of Pakistan. It gave us great concern and great worry,” said Roemer.

Roemer’s remarks came days after Al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden was killed by US Navy Seals in a covert operation in Pakistan’s Abbottabad town on May 2. (ANI)
