Maulana Tariq Jamil’s son Asim had “shot himself in the chest” inside a gymnasium at his home, police said.

Asim Jamil, the son of the Islamic scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil, passed away on Sunday in the town of Talamba, located in Pakistan’s Punjab region. The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Mian Channu, Mohammad Saleem, informed Pakistan-based Dawn publication that Asim was transported to the Talamba Rural Health Centre, where he was pronounced deceased. The body is currently being transferred from the health centre to the family’s residence.

A statement released by the Punjab police spokesperson indicated that the cause of death seemed to be related to a “gunshot.” Speaking to Dawn, Multan Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sohail Chaudhry disclosed that Asim had “shot himself in the chest” inside a gymnasium at his home. He further noted that, according to the family’s account, Asim had died by “suicide”.

The RPO emphasised that the police had acquired CCTV footage corroborating the family’s description of the tragic event, showing Asim shooting himself in the chest. The footage is now being sent for forensic analysis, the Dawn reported.

In a post shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Maulana Tariq Jamil said that his son’s demise was an “accidental death”. “We request you all to remember us in your prayers on this sad occasion. May Allah grant my son a high place in heaven,” he added.
