Deemed Varsities Appeal to PM to Re-consider De-recognition Move

A few days after Centre’s decision to de-recognise 44 deemed universities, a Joint Action Committee of these varsities has appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to re-consider the proposed move, reported ANI.

Professor Padmanabhan, Vice Chancellor of MGR University disclosed this in Chennai on Wednesday.

He termed the central government’s decision as a harsh one, which, he said, would influence academics in several spheres.

“We all came to a conclusion that we would like to appeal to the various people in MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development), primarily the Minister for Human Resource Development as well as to the Prime Minister to say that any ad-hoc and fast decision like this should not be taken in the interest of students, the number of staff members who are involved and the number of other people who are involved,” he was quoted as saying.

Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal had announced on Tuesday that the concept of deemed universities would soon be done away with.

The Centre’s decision followed recommendations of a Higher Education panel on deemed universities.

An expert committee reviewed the functioning of 126 of the 130 deemed universities and found 44 among them unworthy for the status.
