Protesters Breach Lankan Mission in New Delhi

A group of suspected Indian Tamil protesters broke into the compound of the Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi on Friday, no staff members were present on the premises at the time as the mission was closed on account of a public holiday, say media reports.

“Some persons entered the compound. Before the police came they left the place,” Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat, was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

Bhagat, speaking over the phone, added that the police were yet to ascertain what the protest was about.

A top Lankan mission official later said it was difficult to confirm the identity of the intruders, but added that the mission believed them to belong to an anti-Sri Lankan government group based in Tamil Nadu.

Ministry for External Affairs informed that security arrangements around the mission had been heightened and added that action would be taken against the protesters.
