New Delhi: There has been no violence in southeast or west Delhi, the police said on Sunday, requesting people not to believe in rumours circulating on social media.
The appeal came amid panic in certain localities on Sunday evening over reports of fresh clashes following this week’s violence over the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) that has left 46 people dead and hundreds injured.
“Some unsubstantiated reports of tense situation in SouthEast & West District are being circulated on social media. It is to reiterate that these are all rumours. Don’t pay attention to such rumours. Delhi Police is closely monitoring accounts spreading rumours and taking action,” the police tweeted.
Amid reports of fresh violence, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had shut the entry and exit gates of Tilak Nagar, Nangloi, Surajmal Stadium, Badarpur, Tughlakabad, Uttam Nagar West and Nawada stations. The stations were later opened.
“The situation on the ground is very normal. It is under control. We received many calls. All the calls were found to be fake. We sent the calls to the SHOs, inspectors. We are dominating the area. We are talking to the people,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, Southeast Delhi, RP Meena told NDTV.
“We got calls from Khadar area, Khadda colony, Badarpur, Ekta Vihar, Tughlakabad. All these areas are under control. There’s no such incidents. Metro stations are working now,” he added.
DCP, Central Delhi, Sanjay Bhatia said,” There is no violence in Baljit Nagar and Patel Nagar, don’t pay attention to rumours. There is peace in Central Delhi”.
AAP MLA Atishi tweeted that reports of mobs in some parts of south Delhi are false.
“Have received WhatsApp messages about mobs in Govindpuri and Kalkaji. These rumours are all false. Situation is peaceful. Police are patrolling the area,” she said.
Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh urged people to remain calm.
“I reached at the site as soon as I heard of the rumour of riots; shops were shut, people were in a state of panic but no one saw any riots happening. It was a conspiracy to spread rumours and spoil the atmosphere. I appeal to people to maintain peace and brotherhood and do not believe the rumours,” he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
More than 200 people were injured in the four-day flare-up as armed men went on a looting, burning and thrashing spree. Among those injured were 11 police personnel, including senior officers Amit Sharma and Anuj Kumar.
Two Special Investigative Teams (SITs) have been constituted under Crime Branch, Delhi Police to probe the violence.
