Son Sweety Admits Taking Bribe to CBI; Buta Cries Conspiracy

Sarobjot Singh, son of former Union minister and chairperson the National Commission for the Scheduled Castes Chairman Buta Singh, has reportedly admitted his involvement in a bribery case to CBI. In meantime, Buta Singh has termed arrest of his son as conspiracy against his “personal and political life”.

Sarabjot ran charge of allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 1 crore from a Nashik based contractor to close a case before the commission. In the case, he had previous claimed that he was innocent and that it was conspiracy against him and that he was being framed.

“Sarabjot Singh alias Sweety has been arrested along with three other accomplices for allegedly demanding bribe from a Nashik-based contractor Ramrao Patil. Sweety was held after hours of questioning,” the agency’s Joint Director Rishiraj Singh said.

“We are also probing the hawala angle,” he said.

Sweety, while being taken to a city hospital for a medical check-up on Thursday night told reporters, “I’m innocent and I’ve been framed up in this case. All the allegations are false.”

Patil is facing a case under the SC/ST Act and it was being probed by the commission headed by Buta Singh. The contractor had allegedly taken a loan of around Rs 10 crore from a co-operative society on behalf of over 100 people from the Dalit community. He allegedly pocketed the money following which a case was registered against him.

Sweety allegely demanded Rs one crore from Patil to close the case against him with the help of his father. Consequently, Patil lodged a complaint with the CBI following which Sweety was picked up from Delhi and brought to Mumbai on Thursday night where he was questioned by the CBI.

Following his arrest, the opposition is calling for Buta Singh’s resignation from the Commission. However, Singh said that arrest of his son in a corruption case was a conspiracy against his “personal and political life”.

“This is a conspiracy to malign my political and personal life,” Buta Singh told reporters after his son Sarabjot Singh alias Sweety Singh was arrested by the CBI.

Buta Singh, however, refused to comment on the role of the CBI.
