Newly elected President of France sworn in at Paris

PARIS: The newly elected France Francois Hollande sworn on Tuesday as president of France at the Elysee Palace in central Paris at around 10:00 (08:00 GMT).

The traditional procession of lying of the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier underneath the Arc de Triomphe was carried out after that.

He then paid tribute to 19th-Century educational reformer Jules Ferry and the Nobel Prize-winning chemist Marie Curie. He was the first Socialist leader in 17 years to occupy the Elysee Palace.

He vowed to open a new path in Europe. In his first speech he said, “My mandate is to bring France back to justice, open up a new path in Europe, and contribute to world peace and preserve the planet.”

“I will tell them the necessity for our continent is to protect, in an unstable world, not only its values but its interests in the name of commercial exchange,” he added.

Mr. Hollanade will likely to fly to Germany late Tuesday to have an important meeting with German Chancellor Merkel. He also takes dinner with her.” We don’t think the same on everything, we’ll tell each other that so that together we can reach good compromises.”
