Nawaz Sharif meets Army Chief to review security

Islamabad: Reeling from a spate of terror attacks that killed over 30 security personnel, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday chaired a meeting during which army chief Gen Raheel Sharif briefed him on the prevailing law and order situation.
“Prime Minister chaired a meeting where the security situation in Pakistan was reviewed. This meeting was convened in the wake of recent terror incidents in Bannu, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Mastung and Karachi,” said a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The Army Chief briefed Sharif about the security situation. Different existing terror-related legislations were also reviewed, it said.

The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, ISI chief Lt Gen Zahir-ul-Islam, DGMO Maj Gen Amir Riaz and DGMI Maj Gen Sarfaraz Sattar.

An air offensive targeted militant hideouts in Mir Ali and Miranshah amid calls for the government to act decisively against the Taliban and its affiliates.

However, Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer said the air strikes were not a prelude to a military offensive and jets bombed the hideouts in retaliation for recent attacks.

Thirteen people, including six soldiers, died when a suicide bomber blew himself up near the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi on Monday while a blast within Bannu cantonment on Sunday killed 26 troops.
